HISTORY & BACKGROUND OF OUR UNIT
The Department of Health (DOH) released a memorandum under the Administrative Order No. 2008-0023 with subject on National Policy for Patient Safety last July 30, 2008, our hospital launched its first Patient Safety Committee in the hospital last May 17, 2011. Launching of the Patient Safety Program was July of the same year.
In April of 2017 under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Dean L. Nicolo, he received a proposal to set-up a quality and safety unit for WVMC with the following composition, the creation of 3 sub-units namely:
The Hospital Safety and Health Unit was re-structured in September of 2018 and is headed by Dr. Raoul R. Cañonero as chairperson. The creation of the Unit was patterned from the different hospitals like St. Lukes, The Medical City, Asian Hospital and Makati Medical Center. We are directly under the supervision of the Medical Center Chief II of Western Visayas Medical Center and is concerned with providing Occupational Safety, Patient Safety and Environmental Safety in the context of services provided by the WESTERN VISAYAS MEDICAL CENTER. We formally launched the Unit last January 10, 2018. Our unit is the planning, monitoring, evaluating arm of the MCC for all programs handled by the Hospital Safety and Health (HoSH) Unit. The Sub-units were headed by Dr. Bryna Kimberly B. Jabines as Occupational Safety Officer, Rachel G. Abaldonado, as Patient Safety Officer and Engr. Ruby A. Aviador as Environmental Safety Officer. Under the Occupational Safety sub-unit, is the Employees Clinic which was launched last February 15, 2019. Dr. Aniceto Monsale was our Employees Clinic Physician then and Janine Lyca S. Geonanga as our Occupational Health Nurse. Dr. Monsale was replaced by Dr. Dibie Jane S. Lagamson as Occupational Health Physician of the Employees Clinic when the former passed away. At present, Dr. Joy S. Demetria is the chairman of the unit and Dr. Cañonero is our consultant.
The Hospital Safety and Health Unit was able to formulate programs and held seminars on Hospital Safety to promote awareness and create a culture of safety within the hospital. One of the programs launched is the eradication of pests through our Oplan Garfield. We collaborated with the LGU to aid us in achieving our goal.
We create policies about health and safety as well as formulate plans on implementation of programs that has to do with Patient Safety, Occupational Safety and Environmental Safety. We monitor the implementation of the programs and we evaluate in order to make better plans for Quality and Safety in the hospital.
